Needing frequent supplies and food stuffs delivered, Houghton University and the United States postal service are very well acquainted with each other. Fed Ex, UPS, and USPS all make daily trips to the campus, where packages, mail and other items are handed off to Houghton University's own unique post office. Houghton University's post office then processes that mail and places it into each students assigned CPO box. If there are any packages that are delivered to the students that cannot fit into the CPO boxes, students are email and asked to come pick up their packages.
It's not a job that's advertised to students. Some suspect this is because it's such a quiet job, but for the students who do manage to get hired for the mailroom, they find it to be a relatively easy and friendly job.
Caleb Bailey is one of those student workers. Starting work there in 2024, Caleb helps separate mail in the post office, as well as helps with on-campus deliveries. The campus deliveries consist of delivering packages to the various departments of the university, such as Science, Art, Music, and others.
"It has given me a few more friends as the people I work with were not people I really interacted with beforehand." Bailey answered when asked about how the job affected his social life here on campus.
"It's a great team of people to work with too. Everyone has fun but makes sure work gets done first." he answered when asked about what the work environment was like. Bailey also added that the work could be fun as well, though that depended on they types of packages and where they had to go.
Overall, while the mailroom may be a fairly straightforward job, it allows for students to earn experience as well as build new relationships with their peers. And from the sound of it, it allows for students to have fun while working as well.
